I’m a current PhD researcher in Media, Culture and Heritage at Newcastle University, and I have a diverse academic background, including in media analysis, gender studies, popular music studies, critical discourse analysis, literary analysis, and linguistics.
My current PhD research, which is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), explores how women experience working in the British music industries and how they think about media representations of themselves and (other) women musicians, particularly women who play in rock/heavier bands. Focussing on women rock musicians and British popular music journalism, my research project aims to provide new insights into the intersections between gender, the media, and popular music industries.
My previous research at Newcastle University was published in the academic journal Rock Music Studies:
Mengede, Sarah (2020) Women Rock! How A North-East Music Blogger Redefines Women’s Role in Rock Music: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Rock music studies, 1–19.
