I’m Subject Leader for Popular Music Studies at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA). My key research interests are popular music and gender, music and visual creativity, music education, music in everyday life and ethnographic research. My PhD (University of Liverpool) explored music in the everyday lives of young teenage girls, and I have published research into gender-related experiences and issues for musicians in vocational popular music higher education and the music industry. Since 2019, I have worked with the organisation UK Music on their music industry diversity research, contributing to their biennial survey, data analysis, and report. I am currently writing on approaches to analysing visual aspects of popular music for a forthcoming monograph to be published by Bloomsbury Academic.
